The St. Lawrence County 4-H Shooting Sports Program consists almost solely of a 4-H Shooting Sports Club, with open enrollment across the entire county.  Nearly half of our club members have dual membership in another 4-H club in their home community.  The St. Lawrence County 4-H Shooting Sports Club holds its monthly meetings and shoots at the Norfolk Rod and Gun Club, which boost covered outdoor rifle ranges up to 200 yards, two trap ranges, an outdoor archery range, and a heated indoor 50 foot range.  The location proved perfect for our club’s events.

Each monthly event was split between range operations and hand-on/classroom blocks of instruction.  During the course of the 2008 4-H year the club conducted the following activities:

  • Safety, Safety, Safety!
  • Air gun and rifle marksmanship on the indoor and outdoor rifle ranges.
  • Introduction to shooting from the standing, kneeling and prone firing positions.
  • Basic archery.
  • Shotgun and trap shooting.
  • Wildlife and wetlands (DEC Biologist).
  • Turkey calling and decoy use (Knight and Hale Pro-Staff)
  • Recreational land management (DEC Forester)
  • Backcountry campsite clean-up, as a community service project  (DEC)
  • Six adults and 2 junior instructors attended 4-H Shooting Sports certification in February 2008.
Our club also received a $4,000 NRA grant for the purchase of shotguns, rifles, ammunition, cleaning supplies and safety equipment.
